Bifolio menu, 11.25" x x 8.5". folded, cover printed in full color, featuring a post fox-hunting tableau. Laid in, a second menu printed one side for New Year's Day Dinner, n.d. [c.1933 - 1936]. Among the entrees in the New Year's menu, Roast Prime Ribs of Beef Au Jus for 75¢ which came with soup and other hors d'oeuvre plus vegetable and dessert, coffee. Bottle of milk would be 5¢ extra. The price in the regular menu for Prime Ribs Platter was 90¢ which included mashed potatoes and spinach. Also included, a biofolio Wine List with the same tableau - two seated foxhunters at an outdoor table enjoying a tankard of beer, while other hunters on horseback along with their dogs arrive at the tavern. The light orange image of Lew Tendler in boxing stance is visible when the wine menu is opened (does not appear on the daily menu). Together 3 pieces. Gabe Oppenheim, author of Boxing in Philadelphia: Tales of Struggle and Survival, observed that Tendler's was a "pub where mobsters, athletes, and writers gathered - where working-class men ate and drank alongside the city's power players." The owner, Lew Tendler, was a Philadelphia Jewish lightweight who lost twice to Benny Leonard for the title and retired in 1928 not wanting to end up without a dime. He opened his restaurant in 1932 during Prohibition. Frequently his crowds included Jewish and Italian mafias. During fight nights, the bar was packed, notably so in 1952 when Rocky Marciano challenged Jersey Joe Walcott for the heavy weight title. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8498
