Written on "House of Representatives" letter heading Washington, DC, dated Jan 29th, 1877 from NY Congressman Andrew Williams, to a Harry Wood, whom I believe was manager of one of his iron mining interests in NY state. Andrew Williams (August 27, 1828 October 6, 1907) was an American politician, manufacturer, merchant and miner from the State of New York. He was a Republican who was elected to the 44th and 45th Congresses holding office from March 4, 1875, to March 3, 1879. The bulk of the letter gives insight into the running of the mine, business competition, the market etc. Chateaugay ore is mentioned, as well as the town of Clayburgh and business rival (Peter) Tremblay, however he ends with a paragraph or 2 as to his thoughts and hopes to the resolution of the Rutherford Hayes disputed election of 1876/1877. ".tomorrow we select the 5 members of the Commission. Senate does the same and then the commission will be organized, both houses meet Thursday this week to count the vote. I don't like to predict the result but have some fears we may be beaten out of our hard fought victory. Some Republicans are confident Hayes will be declared elected, I hope but am not certain." He goes on to say how he voted against the Bill and would do again. Believes this is the wrong way to do it and that the Republicans had a strong case and now with the vote are only giving themselves a 50/50 chance. interesting historical and political letter keywords Congress, House of Representatives, New York, Rutherford Hayes, election, mining in New York, iron ore, New York history, Republicans.
