"Social Justice" -- May 23rd, 1938 Issue of Antisemitic Serial Founded by "The Radio Priest" Charles Coughlin

The May 23rd, 1938 issue of "Social Justice", a political periodical published weekly that espoused antisemitic and anti-Communist polemics between 1926 until 1942. Founded by Father Charles Coughlin (1891-1979), a media-savvy "Radio Priest" who used the radio waves and periodicals to disseminate antisemitic ideology. He received funding from Nazi sympathizers, though he continually denied being a sympathizer and anti-Semite himself. In April 1942, Roosevelt's administration stepped in, leading to the second-class mailing privilege of "Social Justice" being revoked. This effectively ended the paper's run, as it could no longer be delivered to its audience. It also ended Coughlin's time in the public eye, though he kept serving as a priest until the mid-1960s. Ironically, Coughlin had been an early supporter of Roosevelt. The present issue is dated May 23rd, 1939 and is comprised of: national and world political news; replies to reader mail from Coughlin; editorials, articles, and opinion pieces on communism and Lenin, political upheaval in India, the economy, and politics in Washington. Includes an interesting article by Coughlin titled "Communism's Third Step", part of his "Thought for the Week" series. It lists Mussolini as the "Man of the Week". Single vol.
