Duplicated typescript, c200pp. foolscap (text printed one side of the paper only), replacement pages in various colours, numerous taped overlays &c; apparently Sophie Coussein's copy, with her detailed manuscript notes throughout, most in French; loosely inserted a photograph, 203 x 253mm, of (?) Jeanne Moreau (Mademoiselle), naked in the forest. "All the dialogues of the film will be shot in English first. Then a second version will be shot in French. The scenes in Italian will be shot in Italian, English and French." Marguerite Duras wrote the script, based on Jean Genet's story, and Tony Richardson directed; David Watkin was responsible for cinematography, with Sophie Coussein the French, and Anthony Gibbs the English editors; it was shot in Le Rat, a small village 80km east of Limoges. With Jeanne Moreau in the title role, Ettore Manni starred as Manou, who comes to an unfortunate end. The film was first shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1966; opening in France proper the following month, in the US in August, in Italy in September, and in the UK in January 1967. The Times's film critic duly reported, 12 January, "On a listless summer afternoon a teacher, not young, not old, holds forth to her unconcerned class. The subject is French history, but before we know where we are it has become magic and the dark forces, Joan of Arc and Gilles de Raie, inextricably mixed up in the teacher's mind. What do her pupils make of this? Nothing, presumably, any more than the simple yokels round the place can begin to understand what makes 'Mademoiselle' tick. But we can make something of it: the monologue is perfectly in the spirit of Jean Genet, on whose original scenario Tony Richardson's new film is founded, and its effect, as delivered by Jeanne Moreau, is hypnotically gripping."
