IMPORTANT SIGNED LETTER BY RONALD REAGAN. On the heels of the great success of his famous speech for Barry Goldwater, Reagan weighs a political career for himself. Reagan "stepped up his activism in 1964, serving as co-chairman of Barry Goldwater's presidential campaign in California and delivering a speech at the Republican National Convention in San Francisco. After the convention, as the Republican Party's chances of unseating incumbent Lyndon Johnson dwindled, Reagan stood by his candidate even as other Republicans kept their distance form Goldwater's conservative message, confrontational style, and disastrous poll numbers. When some of Goldwater's supporters asked Reagan to tape a television appearance on the candidate's behalf, he readily agreed. The campaign bought thirty minutes of airtime on NBC on October 27. Reagan's reincarnation as a political figure began that night. In the decades to come, Reagan's admirers would refer to the television address of October 27, 1964 as THE Speech, the speech that launched one of the nation's most memorable political careers, the speech that put Reagan on an improbably journey to Sacramento and then the White House. Reagan himself acknowledged that his life was transformed on the October night in 1964. The speech, he wrote in his autobiography, 'was one of the most important milestones in my life'. The speech was an instant hit; it was replayed throughout the country and helped raise eight million dollars for Goldwater's doomed campaign. Ronald Reagan's political career had begun" (Terry Golway, Ronald Reagan's America). After the speech and Goldwater's subsequent defeat, Reagan was under pressure to run for political office. In this important letter, written three weeks after the speech, Reagan acknowledges the pressure and shares his thought about the future and "his responsibility." Dated 19 November 1964 and addressed to Theodore L. Humes, the Pennsylvania State Chairman for Citizens for Goldwater-Miller, the letter reads in full: Dear Ted, Just a hasty line to answer your letter which was a bright spot in the flood of mail I'm still trying to handle. While I have never aspired to a political career I realize there is much to think about in that regard from the standpoint of my responsibility. I assure you I'm going to do some deep soul searching in the days ahead. I appreciate your offer of help and it shall be taken into consideration in my thinking. Best regards. Sincerely, [signed: Ronnie] Ronald Reagan REAGAN, RONALD. Typed letter signed, 19 November 1964. One page on one leaf 8.5 x 11 inch, Reagan's Pacific Palisades letterhead. Zustand: Fine. - Over 360 words typed on 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide creamy white paper. Clayton Yeutter, who later oversaw trade negotiations with Canada under Ronald Reagan, thanks Spiro Agnew's chief of staff Arthur Sohmer for "the gracious invitation to visit you during my tenure at the Foreign Service Institute" though he declines since Sohmer will likely be very busy with his work for the Vice Presidential candidate in the final days of the Presidential campaign. Yeutter writes of having done some "farm policy work for Mr. Nixon" earlier and comments that the campaign appears to have a comfortable lead though he's concerned about the "Wallace movement", "We can do without a third party in this country, and particularly without one that has the fascist trimmings of the American Freedom Party". Considering his later negotiations which brought about NAFTA, it is interesting that Yeutter goes on to comment on how difficult it was to intensely study Spanish for 12 to 14 hours a day while at the FSI. Signed "Clayton". Folded horizontally and vertically for mailing, else fine with the original mailing envelope bearing a Franklin D. Roosevelt U.S. postage stamp and with Sohmer's "Executive Department" address re-routed to his home. The American lawyer Clayton Yeutter (1930-2017) was a farmer who served as the U.S. trade representative under Ronald Reagan. Yeutter was involved in the multilateral trade negotiations with Uruguay which resulted in creation of the World Trade Organization. He oversaw the negotiations which led to the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement and subsequently led to further negotiations with Mexico resulting in NAFTA. Yeutter went on to serve as Agriculture Secretary under President George H.W. Bush. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 95496

It was a great Christmas present, and I really do appreciate your thoughtfulness. Many, many thanks for selecting this "piece of the West" for me. We had a wonderful holiday season and hope you did, too. Nancy joins me in wishing you all our very best for 1982. Sincerely, "Ron" Mr. and Mrs. Charles Foy 450 North Rossmore Los Angeles, California 90024." The recipient, Charles Foy was an American actor of both the vaudeville stage and film. He acted with Ronald Reagan in the classic film, Hells Kitchen (1939). In fine condition. Matted and framed with the original transmittal envelope. The entire piece measures 15 inches by 22 inches. Ronald Wilson Reagan served as the 40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989 and became a highly influential voice of modern conservatism. Prior to his presidency, he was a Hollywood actor and union leader before serving as the 33rd governor of California from 1967 to 1975. When Reagan left office in 1989, he held an approval rating of 68%, matching those of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and later Bill Clinton, as the highest ratings for departing presidents in the modern era. He was the first president since Dwight D. Eisenhower to serve two full terms after the five prior presidents did not. Evaluations of his presidency among historians and the general public place him among the upper tier of American presidents. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 133078
