La methode des fluxions, et des suites infinies.
4to (253 x 190 mm), pp xxx [-xxxii] 148 , title in red and black, with numerous woodcut diagrams in text; a fine copy in contemporary mottled French calf. £3000First French edition of Newton's Fluxions, translated by Buffon from the English text of 1736. The method of fluxions and infinite series was the first publication of Newton's complete manuscript on calculus, and was the most complete presentation of his discoveries. Newton had prepared the treatise for the use of students shortly before his death, and entrusted it to Henry Pemberton. It later passed to John Colson, who translated it into English for the 1736 publication.Buffon's anonymous 28-page preface discusses the Newton-Leibniz controversy; Buffon states his preference for the Newtonian method. The only mention of Buffon's name in this publication is on the last leaf, the Approbation of the Académie Royale des Sciences, which states that Maupertuis and Clairault had examined Buffon's translation and recommended it for publication.Babson 173; Wallis 236.
