Una storia degli Ordini equestri non è certa mente priva d'importanza, poichè ad essa è pure unita la storia religiosa, civile e politica di uno Stato e di una Nazione. I lavori, che da circa tre secoli furono pubblicati su questo argomento, non sono pochi: e ciò dimostra come fosse oguor sentita la necessità di narrare le origini e le vicende di quegli Ordini religiosi e cavallereschi, molti de' quali risalgono a tempi antichissimi, e dànno un' idea com pleta ed esatta della pietà e del valore dei nostri antenati.
