Reseña del editor:
Aconcagua “Stone Sentinel” Climbing the Stairway to Heaven, is a true story of a father and two sons who set out on a self-guided expedition to summit the highest mountain in the world outside the Everest Himalayan Chain. Stone Sentinel, Aconcagua, is the highest where supplemental oxygen is not used. At nearing 23,000 ft. (7,000 m) it towers above the Andes in Argentina; every year it will have cost lives of those who underestimated the task to stand upon its summit. Once underway one in our summit party got symptoms of AMS, altitude sickness. We had to descend back down from base camp to lower altitudes and it seemed our summit attempt was derailed. There were not sufficient days left for expert protocol guidelines to be followed to enable making the summit. We believed we could be lucky just going up some higher on the mountain to maybe one of the upper summit camps. Instead we had Serendipitous insight for a new acclimation model which we employed with exceptional results. Finally this seemed would not even be enough. The ranger at Camp 2 reported weather, Viento Blanco, was going to hit, a high altitude jet-stream storm. It came down finally to either going for a summit attempt with shortened days, only four days out from base camp, instead of the recommended ten days; or we could not go at all. Included in this offing was that we did not even have sufficient time to move up to summit Camp 3, Berlin. Camp 2, Nido de Condores, was to become our summit camp. This produced a daunting 4,850 feet summit day; this is over half the total distance from base camp to the summit and usually amounts to five days to accomplish. This proved to be a grueling 21.5 hour summit day. It started with a 3:30 am Alpine Start out of Camp 2, “Nido.” After a daunting climb up the Canaleta, and running out of water, the three of us, a Father and two sons, stood together on the summit against these improbable odds. This is that insightful suspenseful story with many anecdotal impressions of what it means to climb a challenging summit in the beautiful Andes Range. There are as well valuable insights for mountaineers heading to Aconcagua,” the Stone Sentinel,” including a depiction of our unique acclimation model and how this affected our efforts to make the summit.
