Críticas:
"Gene Clanton has devoted his long and productive career as a scholar to understanding Populism and its context. We are in his debt for that and for this rich study of a neglected subject: what the Populists said and how they voted in Congress during the crisis of the 1890s."--American Historical Review"Engagingly written, replete with telling anecdotes about colorful Populist personalities."--Journal of American History "This groundbreaking portrait of congressional Populists is an absorbing narrative depiction of an embattled legislative minority during one of America's most tumultuous decades."--Agricultural History "Certainly Clanton has produced a wonderful compilation of an important group of politicians and intellectuals who were uncannily prescient about the nature of capital and labor in the twentieth century."--Western Historical Quarterly "This is a magnificent source book for political commentary in the 1890s."--Journal of Southern History "With its focus on the published record, Congressional Populism is a valuable exploration of a neglected topic."--Michigan Historical Review "Provides a new and welcome dimension to the understanding of the Populist political revolt of the late nineteenth century."--Annals of Iowa "Clanton has made a significant contribution to the history of American Populism. Readers interested in American political history will enjoy this lively and insightful foray into this often maligned and misunderstood group of democratic agitators."--Kansas History "Clanton is exceptionally well qualified to write the first serious history of the 1890s Populists--the real Populists--in Congress. He also tells the truth: that what's often called 'populism' these days is 180 degrees to the right of the real thing."--Walter Nugent, author of Tolerant Populists
Reseña del editor:
In the political landscape of the late nineteenth century, the Populist party was recognized even by its critics as being ahead of its time. Its members saw themselves as bearers of a reform message vital to the nation, reflecting agrarian America's anxiety that the country was moving toward a new form of slavery in the face of changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution. While most studies of Populism have focused on regional activities or on its intellectual and social underpinnings, little has been written about the record of this radical party in the national legislature. Now one of our foremost scholars of Populism presents the first comprehensive treatment of the party in Congress, revealing the programs and personalities that shaped and ultimately doomed the movement. Clanton demonstrates that congressional Populism was a positive and humane force in American politics totally distinct from the reactionary political movement that flourishes today under its name.
