Buchbeschreibung XI, 265 S. mit 75 sw. Abb. Zustand: Gut, leichte Gebrauchsspuren. - Good, slight wear/curling to d/j. - "The Neapolitan humanist Jacopo Sannazaro (1458-1530) was the originator of the myth of Arcadia, a dreamy land of youth and beauty where shepherds sing of shepherdesses. As a court poet, writing masques, comic songs and sonnets, he flourished in the last days of the independent Kingdom of Naples, then loyally accompanied his king into exile and stayed with him until his death. Sannazaro's great poem Arcadia was written in Italian. In Latin he also wrote romantic poems about Neapolitan fishermen, and an elaborate celebration of the Nativity which anticipated the imperial splendours of the Counter-Reformation church. - This, the first full biography in English, includes translations from all Sannazaro's works and traces the subsequent development of pastoral by such poets as Joachim du Bellay, Pierre de Ronsard, Remy Belleau and Sir Philip Sidney. The many illustrations bring together virtually all surviving representations of the poet along with photographs of the places associated with his life and wood-cuts from sixteenth-century editions of his works to show how they were presented to his contemporaries. An Appendix gives the original Latin of the poems translated in the text. - Carol Kidwell, BA Queen's University, Canada, PhD Johns Hopkins, was Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of New Brunswick, and Dean of the American College (now University) in Paris. She is now engaged in research in London. Her previous books include Marullus: Soldier Poet of the Renaissance, and Pontano: Poet and Prime Minister, both published by Duckworth" - The jacket painting by Nicholas Kidwell RIBA of Clarke Kidwell Koenig Architekts reproduces the opening scene of Sannazaro s Arcadia with the trees described there.
