Eliot Prize for Poetry, and in 2006 he was a finalist for the National Book Award for Poetry. [From back cover] 1 is the point, 2 the line, 3 the triangle, 4 this stunning debut collection, the sharply perceptive and resonant voice of H. L. Hix, winner of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. Hix's vivid images sometimes disturb, often entrance, but always reveal. To enter the fiery depths of Perfect Hell is to metamorphose. No reader is left unscathed. "H. L. Hix is a poet of intelligence, but the lands of intelligence he brings to his poetry are astonishingly varied. In his own 'Another Winter, Farther Away' he observes that 'Again we do not learn / What we should from what we already know.' In the same way that happiness and despair are often indistinguishable, so knowledge and ignorance are disconcerting neighbors in these poems: 'Here is my body, farther from itself I than those from those curtains or that mantelpiece, / Or than my mind from the books on the shelf.' There is simply no one else looking at the world with the same astonishment and delight, the same intelligence combined with humor and despair, as this man in this book." -Bin Ramke.
