About the Author Born in 1942, Helen Rivas-Rose spent years reaching self-fulfillment. Living in the U.S., Canada, Spain, and Portugal, she acquired knowledge about other cultures (including mastering other languages), but she did not learn to understand herself. She had almost no peers as friends. Finally, in 1989, things began to change for her when she became the volunteer director of a nonprofit alternative-artists’ space in Portland, Maine. During her 12 years there, she wintered at the artists’ colony in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Fueled by creativity in both places, she developed an inner drive to overcome her shyness and embark on a path that included writing art columns for the newspaper, singing and speaking in public and finally, being warm and finding friends. Her drive blossomed in 2001 when she discovered that she wanted to be a writer and shortly thereafter she left the artists' space. She decided to write about her ordeal with shyness, of being unable to express herself for 50 years. From 2001 to 2009, in addition to belonging to several writers' groups and working with editors, she attended numerous writing conferences and residencies including the Vermont Studio Center, the Stonecoast Writers' Conference, Haystack, and the San Miguel Writers' Conference. In 2011, Rivas-Rose was interviewed on Maine Public Broadcasting, about "Conquering Crippling Shyness: A Maine Woman’s Tale," (available on Maine Things Considered at MPBN.net). To date, Brave is the only published, major memoir on overcoming severe shyness. Rivas-Rose has two sons and two grandsons. She continues to live in Maine and Mexico. In both places, she cultivates family, friendship, and social activities while always finding time to pursue her hard-won passion: writing.
