Reseña del editor:
Nuclear processes are assumed to generate high energy radioactive products that are easy to detect. That is a poor assumption because in nature many more pathways can be sampled. Actually even the fusion process in our Sun at the core is a relative low level process that does not compete with the metabolic output of heat from the human body on an equivalent mass basis. The scale of the Sun is required to supply us its abundant output. Nuclear processes that do not leave easily detected radioactive decay products will only leave a heat signature. There is now extensive experimental evidence that such processes exist and are of a nuclear origin. The exact details of the nuclear mechanisms involved and the sequence of events required to extract useful quantities of heat are unknown. The earth and its tectonic and volcanic behaviour has a number of open questions to be answered by what local thermal sources drive these processes. By tracing chemistries to likely nuclear processes some insight can be gained into reactions that have been ignored. On a more basic level there is a great deal not understood about the dynamics within light stable nuclei that is now being explored with accelerator experiments. When an adequate quantum mechanical analysis of the nucleus exists these low energy process will then be understood.
Biografía del autor:
John P. Wallace attended Columbia University and worked in the labs of Polykarp Kusch. He wrote theses for Martin Gutzwiller and John K. Tien. Now at Casting Analysis Corp. he develops and manufactures instruments used for the monitoring and control of crystal growth processes, metal defect detection and instruments for monitoring hydrogen in metals. Ganapati R. Myneni graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, India. His PhD thesis work was carried out at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin. He represents several scientific organizations and universities in Virginia. His areas of work include low temperature physics, vacuum and cryogenic instrumentation, hydrogen in matter and superconducting science. Michael J. Wallace attended Hampden-Sydney College and learned experimental physics from Weyland Joyner and Montana Tech he did a master's thesis on Electrical Geophysics. He worked at the NRAO in Greenbank, West Virginia on the calibration of the Byrd telescope, and on the analysis of VLBA data. He is now employed by Willowstick Technologies LLC doing ground water mapping as a geophysical service. Robert D. Pike is a graduate of The George Washington University and has a Ph.D. in chemistry from Brown University where he studied inorganic chemistry with Prof. Dwight Sweigart. For 20 years he has been on the faculty at the College of William and Mary, currently Garrett-Robb-Guy Professor of Chemistry Prof. His research encompass inorganic chemistry, metal-organic chemistry, X-ray crystallography, and photophysics of materials. Glenn Westphal received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Utah in 1979. He joined Texas Instruments working on advanced semiconductor materials. He worked on III-V thin film processes and bulk growth III-V & II-VI processes. After moving to IC design management he became a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff in 2000. In 2005 he established a consulting and software development company in Salt Lake City.
