ITALO-AMERICAN INTELLECTUAL RELATIONS Resume of the address delivered by Dr. Stephen P. Duggan, Director of the Institute of International Education, delivered before the 'Circolo Italiano" of Columbia University, at the Raphael Day Celebration, May 7, 1920. A durable peace can only be founded upon international goodwill and that in turn is wholly dependent upon a knowledge by the people of each country of the institutions and ideals of the people of other countries. No nation can fully sympathize with another nation if it remains ignorant of that nation's problems and difficulties. If, therefore, good relations are to exist between Italy and the United States we must undertake a campaign of education in the United States to understand the soul of Italy, and Italians must undertake a similar campaign in their country to understand the soul of the United States. I speak feelingly about this subject because I know the deep ignorance that exists among even intelligent Americans about the history, literature and institutions of Italy. That ignorance is only equalled by the ignorance I found in Italy last year among intelligent people of the history, literature and institutions of the United States. There is no use for us to indulge in mere oratory here tonight about the un wisdom of such a condition. It is much more important to consider ways and means of removing the obstacles.
