Not illustrated. 1897 Excerpt: ...July or after September, as the snow lies deep and the high winds cause snow-drifts. There is little or no wood, occasional juniper roots serve as fuel. There is no vegetation except in the narrow valleys, and that is scanty. Through supplies and transport are indispensable, and can be obtained at Gurais and Skardu. This is the shortest and m7t direct route from Kashmir to Skardu, and is frequented by travellers, notwithstanding its many drawbacks. At Ali Malik Marhi 01 miles another track turns off eastwards, and crossing the shoulder of the intervening mountain goes down the parallel Sutpur Loongma valley to Skardu. There are 0 marches from Lalpani 07 m., junction of 1 streams on the Sutpur Cho 00 miles, on the eastern shore of the Sutpur Tso or Lake 00 miles, and Skardu 00 miles. Hence there used formerly to be two routes leading over the high Msstagh range towards Yarkund, the two passes being about 0 miles a part. Both have been disused for 0 years, partly owing to changes in the glaciers and to fear of robbers on the Northern side of the range. The route recorded by Major Godwin Austen in 00 is as under:--On the northern side, this route, as explored by Lieutenant F. E. Younghusband in 00, descended down a glacier and after joining the route from the other Mustagh pass at Parong and another path from the Shimshal pass (due west which leads into Hunza) at Suget jungal, came to the Shaksgam or Oprang valley and thence reached the Yarkund river either at Gil or at Dora by crossing the Aghil Dawan pass 16,00 feet in to Raskuni. There is no path yet known onwards down the Yarkund valley, owing it is said to high cliffs which border the river. From Dora, this route goes eastwards up the Yarkund valley to Chiragh Saldi, and thence northwards over the Chiragh...
