Not illustrated. 1913 Excerpt: ... Sarah. (II) Joseph, son of Thomas and Hester (Wakeman) Selden, was baptized November 2, 1651, in Hartford, Connecticut, died at Hadlyme, July 14, 1724. He went with his mother to Hadley in 1659. In 1684 he removed to Deerfield, returning to Hadley in 1694. On January 31, 1696, he bought out the heirs of Hon. John Leverett, and on another occasion made a purchase of Captain John Cullick. Joseph Selden is described as of Hadley in the Hadlyme deed. "He was an active and enterprising man," once said Mr. Judd, "somewhat excitable and sometimes rash in his doings." In 1681 he was assessed for building Port River bridge. In 1687 he paid taxes in Hadley, and was fined for his wife wearing silk dresses. He fought in King Philip's war and was in the Deerfield fight. The property on which the original Selden homestead was built is still in possession of the family. He married, February n, 1677, Rebecca, daughter of Deacon Edward Church, of Hatfield. She died June 2, 1726, and was buried beside her husband in the graveyard at Hadlyme. Children: 1. Rebecca, born February 12, 1678; married James Wells, of Haddam, Connecticut. 2. Esther, born April 11, 1680, died July 21, 1681. 3. Joseph, born May 10, 1682, died April 6, 1729; married Ann Chapman. 4. Thomas, born 1684, died September 12, 1754; married Sarah. 5. Hannah, born 1686; married Daniel Brainerd. 6. Mary, born March 5, 1689; married Isaac Spencer. 7. Esther, born May 2, 1691; married Jabez Chapman. 8. Samuel, see forward. 9. Sarah, baptized July 30, 1712, died before February 1, 1725. 10. Rebecca, married Joseph Ely. (Ill) Captain Samuel Selden, son of Joseph and Rebecca (Church) Selden, was born in Hadley, Massachusetts, May 17, 1695, and died in Hadlyme, Connecticut, February 28, 1745. Capt...
