I hoped they were going to cross, in which case I should have left them alone and gone on; but not a bit of it--they were only making for a patch of green grass on the banks of the stream in the bottom. There they kept me waiting for four mortal hours, and do what I could I could not move them quietly. They would take no notice of singing or whistling or knocking stones together, or even look up when I tried to send them off by showing myself. There was no way past them, and I, of course, did not want to send them off in a fright, and disturb everything else in sight. They just ran about 20 yards and then started feeding again, and it was not until we were within 50 yards of them that at last they came to the conclusion that something was wrong, and that they had better make themselves scarce. Little, Maxim, and I loaded ourselves with pretty nearly all the meat except the forequarters, which we hid under a pile of stones for protection against foxes and ravens, and started back to camp rather disappointed, but still, from what we had seen, hoping better things for the morrow. This ewe, having no Iamb to take it out of her, was in prime condition, and the mutton was the best I ever tasted, as good as the best Welsh, and very tender.
