Reseña del editor:
During the Crusades, a family is displaced from their farm where they raise horses. Fielo, the father convinces his wife, Elizabeth, and young sons, Erik, Andre and Paul, they must leave. They lead their herd east to find a home in the forest Fie had visited long ago. They trade most of the horses for a small deserted castle in a village under dominion of Lord Randolph. Working together the family turns the ruin into a home. As time passes, the family builds good relationships. Fie teaches forest lore to his boys and their friends. Growing older they come to love nature, gain self confidence and acquire great knowledge of the forest. Erik begins to assume leadership roles. Fielo instructs his sons and friends in archery. Skill with bow and arrow is paramount for survival. The young people learn the craft of making equipment from materials found in the forest. Popularity of archery increases after Erik impresses villagers at a local contest. Erik and his friends form "The Order of the Arrow", enlisting Fie, the Friar, some parents, and a "Boyer" and "Fletcher" from the castle. Skill in archery improves to a level previously unsurpassed. A Fifth Crusade was fought and ended in disaster. It was followed, seven years later, by the Sixth Crusade. Due to previous failures, nobles were required to provide many soldiers to the distant war. As a result, bandits roam freely. With the homeland unprotected, Lord Randolph enlists The Order of the Arrow to train as squires for possible elevation to knighthood if they agree to defend his castle. He asks younger members, also good archers, to serve as pages. Under tutelage of five knights they gain skill in weaponry, horsemanship, military tactics and social graces. Archery, the primary defense from the castle walls is practiced by all. Hebron, a Comandeor of previous wars, seeing the countryside ripe for plucking, ruthlessly moves to increase his holdings. With help of Lockner, ano
Biografía del autor:
Youngest in a family of five, Carson Clay was raised by the Mississippi River near Rock Island Illinois. The turn of the twentieth century saw many immigrants come to that region from Scandinavia, Belgium, Mexico and Germany. His father's parents came from Sweden; his mother, with her family, came from Belgium. The stable family values and work ethics, of the four ethnic groups were pivotal in development of that region. With the goal of becoming a military pilot Carson worked nights in a factory and construction during the day to earn money to complete the two years of college needed. Passing U.S. Navy tests he was sent to further testing and training as a Jet Fighter Pilot in Los Alamos' Naval Air Station in California. Carson's dream was shattered when doctors discovered his inadequate peripheral vision. However, the Navy, Air Force and Army offered many other options. He entered the Army's Southeastern Signal School in Georgia after Basic Training in California. After Army training, Carson served at Headquarters of the Third Infantry Division deployed in Germany. From there he assisted in Army Long Range Reconnaissance operations. Following military service he was hired by John Deere in Illinois. Working nights and with financial assistance through the "GI Bill" he completed daytime courses and improved his writing skills. He graduated from Augustana College in Illinois in 1974. Continuing at Deere until 1984, he then moved to Michigan with his wife and three sons for employment in the Automotive Industry. In Michigan, as Senior Quality Engineer, he initiated achievement of World Class with many products for customers such as; Daimler-Chrysler, Ford and GM as well as many other top German, Italian, Japanese and Swedish manufacturers. Among other tasks this required concept, generation and presentation of clear, cost effective quality plans for products, mutually acceptable to customers, suppliers and manufacturers alike. In all seasons Carson, with hi
