Reseña del editor:
Freedom of an Illegal Immigrant: The Untold Story of My Search for a Place in the World is a memoir about an African orphan who grows up feeling different, isolated, and unwanted even among her own people. She leaves her home country at the age of eighteen, has a brief stay in England, but finds her way to America, where she faces all the struggles of being young and alone in a foreign country. She marries an abusive American citizen and has two children with him, only to come to terms with her own truths, especially the fact that she is a lesbian. When she attempts to end the marriage, her husband attempts to have her deported due to the fact that she never had her immigration paperwork straightened out and has been living here illegally. This memoir confronts all the truths and issues our society shuns, from racism, illegal immigration, and homosexuality to sexual and domestic abuse.
Biografía del autor:
Ruth Marimo is a thirty-one-year-old, single, lesbian, African mother of two. She was inspired to write this memoir while awaiting deportation in jail almost exactly two years ago. She had been in a very abusive marriage for six years, and when she finally found the strength to tell her abusive husband that she wanted out of the marriage, he attempted to have her deported. She was born and raised in the southern African country of Zimbabwe. She moved to the United States when she was nineteen years old in 1999. Her memoir confronts every truth about who she is. She tells her life story as it is, without any sugar-coating, from losing her mother to suicide at the age of five, being raised in different homes by relatives, never feeling like she belonged anyplace, knowing she was different from a very young age, finally accepting that she was a lesbian after being married to a man for six years, sexual abuse, domestic violence, a lonely childhood, facing all her worst fears, almost giving up on life, and finally finding hope through the freedom of accepting who she is.
