In this Comparative Literature analysis, the legacy of Greek antiquity in the works of the Italian Romantic poet Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837) is studied in its European context, with references to such authors as Schiller, Hoelderlin, and Shelley. The monograph is structured in three main chapters, focused on Sappho, Classical Mythology, and Platonism respectively. An extensive Introduction and Conclusion expand the scope of the study to a philosophical reflection on Pessimism along the lines of Schopenhauer's and Nietzsche's thought.

Biografía del autor:

Massimo Mandolini Pesaresi holds a Degree in Classics (1974) and one in Philospphy (1980) from the University of Rome and a PhD in Italian Literature (1990) from Yale University. Has taught at major academic institutions, such as Emory, Georgetown, and Columbia University. He is the author of another book "A Companion for Darkness: Classical Twilights in the II Millennium" (LINCOM, 2006) and of numerous articles on literary criticism and philosophy of language (published in English, Italian, and German).
