Dennis Goodwin has written a number of true-life books and booklets on the characters and incidents who have colored our past. His subjects cover early entertainers, Wild West legends, Civil War participants and the legendary musicians of country, bluegrass and early rock & roll music. In addition to his nonfiction historical books and booklets, he has published numerous articles for magazines like Wild West, True West and Old West. "Through the years," he confided, "I've learned that the secret to bringing people from the past alive in the present, is to realize that they were very much in the present when they were living. It's not like the emigrants plodding across the Oregon Trail looked up and said, 'Wow, Chimney Rock is really awesome...but isn't it weird living in the past like this!' " To produce a lively story, Dennis said he tries to write about past people and events with the same intensity and immediacy as if they were right outside his window.
