Carl B. Pallaver was a first generation American, the product of emigrant parents from the Dolomite mountain area of Austria, now part of northern Italy. Both parents had only a basic primary education. Speaking no English, Carl started school in a coal mining town. These humble beginnings provide the author with compassion for all new immigrants to our nation. His early childhood was spent playing in abandoned coal mines, sulfur creeks and flying kites. At the age of eight his parents moved to a large city and a working class neighborhood. Education was not a high priority to his parents. Carl signed his own report cards and began working part-time at the age of twelve and graduated high school at the age of sixteen. He found working full time to be a “breather” from school. Family circumstances made him live on his own at the age of eighteen. Carl’s next sixteen years included over 15 different employers, night school with technical subjects and a wide range of technical jobs. This background made him a special candidate for the challenging work at three major advanced research institutions. During this period of his life he was happily married, blessed with three well educated, independent children. Carl has served in the military, held public office and has served on the board of a large credit union. He has had a very interesting and rewarding life.
