DEADLY SHUFFLE starts out slowly, but stick with it; the pace picks up. I RECOMMEND this fun, energetic, chick-lit mystery that keeps you enthralled and guessing. It features a seventy-ish show-biz mother and several of her past beaux, any one of whom might be fifty-ish daughter Abby's father, and Abby's new boyfriend, private eye Blade Garret, whose mother was a figure skater -- hence the unusual first name. There is romance, murder, several family secrets, mob connections and a possible half-brother of Abby's. You know, the usual family drama.
The story heats up when a poker game among friends turns deadly. Abby's mother accuses the other men of killing Dr. Thomas Levine, then disappears leaving her unlocked car with a wad of cash and a portfolio of important papers on the seat. Not satisfied with the lack of progress being made by the sheriff and her PI love interest in solving the death and finding her missing mother, Abby takes matters into her own hands. She performs a little B&E at the scene of the crime, questions each of the poker players and both her aunts and generally stirs up a hornet's nest of old relationships in her mother's past which could get them both killed.
This is the second book in the Abby Rollins Mystery series that began with TIMESTEP TO MURDER.
