Reseña del editor:
At 5 a.m. on 3 October 1955 the 69-foot Joyita with 25 people on board slipped out of the harbour at Apia, Samoa, on a routine trip to Fakaofo in the Tokelau Islands. She never arrived. The ship was found five weeks later in poor condition near Fiji. None of those on board was ever found. David Wright, exploring this mystery because his mother's cousin was on the Joyita discovered that a commission of inquiry, a book published in 1962 and other brief accounts still left many questions unanswered. Here he unravels the background to the ill-fated voyage of this South Pacific Mary Celeste and offers his own explanation for the tragedy. A careful and fascinating investigation of the known facts, it is also a gripping story of colourful characters and exotic places.
Biografía del autor:
David Wright received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and is a lecturer in English at the University of Auckland. He is the author of numerous articles and papers and several books, including Ironies of Ulysses and Characters of Joyce. He lives in Auckland, New Zealand.

Buchbeschreibung Soft Covers. Zustand: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Map (illustrator). 1st. Several books, and many more short accounts of the 1955 mystery of the Joyita, have set out to find the reason for the abandonment of this small islands trader and the loss 25 persons who were aboard her. The Joyita had left Apia, in Samoa, for the short voyage to Fakaofo Island in the Tokelau group. She never arrived and despite intensive searches nothing was found until five weeks later the half-sunken, damaged and derilect Joyita was discovered by another inter-islands ship hundreds of miles south west of her intended destination. No conclusive answer to the enduring South Pacific mystery of the Joyita and her complement has been found, but numerous theories, some imaginative and others outlandish, have been advanced as solutions. David Wright's "Joyita" is the most recent and also the most objective account, presented without prejudice to a predetermined scenario. His book examines the early history of the Joyita, its skipper-operator Dusty Miller, the circumstances leadiing up to the voyage to the Tokelaus. the official inquiry into the disaster, the assumptions made in earlier books and articles and his own assessment of "what must have happened" to the little ship and her complement. A well resarched investigation which draws a very reasonable conclusion. First edition of 2002, from Auckland University Press, 127 pages including three appendices, notes, bibliography and index, 34 photos, including portraits in two collations, with one map. Blue card covers are VG with light crease at top front corner, faint former owner stamp top corner half title, otherwise internally excellent. A small/light book, will be posted at cost.
