Thousands of villages and smaller settlements were deserted in England and Wales, mostly between 1340 and 1750. Why were they deserted? Why did some villages survive while others were abandoned? Who was responsible for their desertion? What can we learn about life in the countryside from a study of the deserted sites? These questions have preoccupied archaeologists, geographers and historians since the sites were first recognised in the 1940s. Now ten leading experts in the subject have come together to revisit the deserted villages, and reveal much new evidence and new thinking about these fascinating sites.

The meeting was also attended by Axel Steensberg, a Danish archaeologist whose innovative excavation practices would later be adopted at Wharram Percy, Grahame Clark, whose Archaeology and Society had appeared in 1939, and two young and rising stars of social and economic history, Rodney Hilton, who had just published on Leicestershire estates in the later Middle Ages, and Edward Miller, who was preparing his work on the estates of the abbey and bishopric of Ely. With such a cast assembled it is perhaps no surprise that the outcome of this seminar and field visit would prove to be so influential. Although, as Hoskins would later recollect of the event itself, 'Postan's brilliant driving at times might have ended the subject for ever by extinguishing all the scholars interested in the subject.
