In his delightful memoir, The House of Lachasse, Peter Lewis Crown undertakes to reveal, and to guide us through, this exotic territory, where the characters of both the flamboyant, designers and the frequently demanding and often impossible clients, are all as colourful as the stuff from which those wonderful clothes were made. Ultimately, the book provides a kindly view of these shenanigans, the clue being in the sub-title, The Story of a very English Gentleman, and it is sometimes hard to understand how a man with the courteous and gentle instincts of a diffident, manorial lord, can have survived among the savage, flesh-eating beasts of this particular jungle, but it only makes the journey warmer and more satisfying. Of course, Crown is dealing here with a world which, if not quite lost, has become the demesne of a brasher, newer group, and viewed through the lense of his charming and comfortable prose it is difficult not to feel a twang of nostalgia for those imperious great ladies who made life so hard, yet so rewarding, for this particular gentleman in the London of half a century ago.
