Half title spotted, the very occasional spot in the text, otherwise a very clean crisp copy, p.95 / 96( i.e. sig Bb2. ) witha small tear in the inner margin not affecting the text, similar much smaller tear in the outer margin of p.29 / 30 ( i.e. sig. Ii1. ) of the second book ( Persius ). With divisional title page for each satire." The satires of Aulus Persius Flaccus" has separate dated title page, pagination and register. Early to middle eighteenth century ( ? ) half calf over marbled paper backed boards, the foot of the upper, and the head of the lower joints starting, the spine with five raised bands, compartments with floral decorations in blind, title etc; lettered direct, corners bumped with the boards showing through. Plain endpapers. Overall a very good plus copy. This is Dryden's translation of the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 10th and 16th Satires of Juvenal, and the whole of Persius, in which he was given much assistance from his fellow translators William Congreve and Nahum Tate, and Dryden's sons Charles and John. Approximately 1/3 of the lower end of the FFEP is missing; the back-free end paper has a similar amount of loss. Previous owner's names on FFEP and half-title page. The Dedication is 53 pages, however the last page is numbered xxxix instead of liii. Juvenal's section is 315 pages, Persius's is 87. Some damp staining in the text margins. Text pages are clean in general but some are much darkened, as if the paper was of a different quality. Minimal internal foxing, mostly on the pages closer to the front and back. Text block is sound. First edition: Dryden's long and important essay on satire is in the form of a dedication to the Earl of Dorset. Dryden himself translated Satires I, III, VI, X, and XVI of Juvenal; the others were by William Congreve, Nahum Tate, George Stepney, Stephen Hervey, William Bowles, Thomas Power, Thomas Creech, and John Dryden, Jr. The satires of Persius, all translated by Dryden, have a separate title page, pagination, and signatures; there is a commendatory poem by Congreve prefixed. Contemporary inscription on title page of Richard Martin; slightly later (but still early) armorial bookplate of John Quayle.
