Beschreibung
In Hebrew and Yiddish. The Yiddish, at the bottom of each page, is vowelized and is a translation of the Hebrew above it. 227, 232 pages. 230 x 145 mm. Parts 1 and 2, each with its own title page, in one volume. Old, worn, leather binding with two leather labels on spine, one is green and has the name, in Hebrew, of a previous owner: Moseh Kampisel Katz. Ethical work divided into fifty-two chapters corresponding to the weeks of the year .Two free end papers are printed sheets in Polish. Two pages of the free endpapers have touching inscriptions in Yiddish: 1. "Dem Buch hob ich gekrign fun / mayn mutter ven ich bin gefarn / kain Amerika. Zi hot mir dem / buch gegeben far ayn andenkung / Dos iz gevesn in yor / 1908 / Ikh vil mayn mutter kain mol / nichtt vargesn / Leah Nirenberg" [Translation:] To my very beloved parents First [] I write [] [] of my good health [] [Written by Leah Nierenbach, lower on the page, and therefore probably later:] [Translation:] I received the book from my mother when I traveled to the United States. She gave me the book as a memento. This was in 1908. I will never forget my mother. Leah Nirenbach. [Translation:] Very beloved parents, first I want to inform you about my good HANDLE [= transaction/business/ trade/enterprise] that I have and that I am healthy, thank God, which I wish you to be as well. Secondly, I kiss you [] from my good father I?m writing you about my love [unclear line] I?m writing to you my dear father and mother of my dear name that I?m healthy, thank God. Next, I?m asking you in a friendly manner [] Together that I need 8 rubles. See to it that you send me a letter with money. [In 2023 the Ruble is worth only one U.S. cent. But c. 1900, eight rubles had the value, in 2023 currency, of a few hundred U.S. dollars] [The above duplicative writing is apparently drafts of a letter that was to be sent via the post office] The other side of the 2 free endpapers are in Polish. They are fragments in Polish from Erckmann-Chatrian's work Brigadier Frederic A Story of an Alsacian Exile, as it appeared seriazized in a Polish newspaper, probably circa 1907. That work first appeared in French circa 1874. First published in 1712, in Constantinople, it is his most famous work. Divided into 52 chapters based on the weeks of the year, the writings and sermons included here draw heavily on previous works such as Moses Hagis' "Or Kadmon", the "Tokahot" of the Spanish poets, the "Orhot Hayyim," and the "Rokeah" by Rabbi Eleazar of Worms.
