This is the question which Professor G. A Wells seeks to answer, and it is not quite the same as the question of whether Jesus really did exist. One difficulty is that the documents in the case are riddled with contradictions and inconsistencies, as New Testament scholars admit. Moreover the momentous events described in the Gospels seem to have made little or no impact on pagan and rabbinical contemporaries. The letters of Paul are the earliest Christian writings and they depict Jesus as a superhuman being almost impossible to identify with the Gospel pictures. Further confusion is added by the discovery that the preChristian Essenes had a Messiah who was put to death shortly before 63 BC. The paucity of evidence for the mythicist case is matched by the lack of conclusive evidence for the orthodox view. We are dealing with probabilities, not certainties, Professor Wells contends, and he holds that a plausible case can be made out that Christianity could have emerged without an historical Founder. The conditions of the time were ripe for a fusion of Jewish Messianism, the pagan idea of a dying god, and the teaching of the Qumran Essenes. Professor Wells bases his conclusion on an exhaustive study of biblical criticism and what is so far known of the Dead Sea Scrolls. In a challenging analysis of New Testament ethics he contends that they are not original and are sometimes repugnant. This is a work of solid scholarship, carefully documented, and free from sensationalism. It breaks new ground in the quest for the historical Jesus.
