Ohne Schutzumschlag und der helle Einband daher etwas berieben, sonst gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - TONY VACCARO wurde 1922 in Greensburg (PA) geboren und wuchs in Italien und Amerika auf. 1942 kaufte er seine erste 35mm-Kamera, ein Jahr später wurde er in die US-Army eingezogen. Mit Gewehr und Kamera bewaffnet, nahm er an der Landung der Alliierten in der Normandie teil. Sehr bald wurde ihm klar, dass er lieber den Auslöser als den Abzugshahn betätigte. Vaccaro wollte die Schrecken des Krieges für nachfolgende Generationen dokumentieren, und auch in den gefährlichsten Situationen des Kampfes verlor er dieses Ziel niemals aus den Augen. So entstand ein außergewöhnliches Porträt des Zweiten Weltkriegs und jener Zeit der Not und Hoffnung, die darauf folgte. Die Aufnahmen, mit denen er 1949 in die USA zurückkehrte, sind wohl eines der umfassendsten Foto-Tagebücher eines Soldaten. Entering Germany verfolgt nicht nur Vacca-ros Weg von der deutschen Grenze im Westen bis zu den Kämpfen östlich der Elbe. Die erstmalig in dieser Form präsentierten Fotos berichten darüber hinaus von den verheerenden Auswirkungen des Krieges auf das besetzte Deutschland. Sie erzählen aber auch, wie sich zwischen den vormaligen Kriegsgegnern ein freundschaftliches Verhältnis entwickelt. Vaccaro gelingt es, die gesamte Bandbreite menschlichen Lebens, in den Blick zu nehmen, das Hässliche ebenso wie das Schöne. Zurück in New York wurde Vaccaro 1950 Cheffotograf der Zeitschrift FLAIR und arbeitete außerdem für LIFE, LOOK und VENTURE. Born in Greensburg (PA) in 1922, TONY VACCARO was educated in both Italy and America. He bought his first 35mm camera in 1942 and one year later was drafted into the U.S. Army. G.I. Vaccaro was sent to Europe to join the Allied Invasion of Normandy and soon found he preferred shooting with his camera rather than his rifle. His goal was to make a record of the war's ugly brutality so future generations would know what it had really been like. His dedication, even in the midst of dangerous clashes with Hitler's army, never faltered. When he returned to America in 1949, Vaccaro brought with him an outstanding portrayal of World War II and its aftermath~one of the most comprehensive photographic diaries by a serviceman in any war. Entering Germany traces Vaccaro's wartime journey from Germany's western border, east through battlefields, and across the Elbe river. It continues through the aftermath of the war in the European theater, and documents the Occupation of Germany until 1949.
