Beschreibung: 1900. First Edition. DREISER, Theodore. Sister Carrie. New York: Doubleday, Page, 1900. Octavo, original red cloth. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000.Exceptionally rare first edition of Dreiser s controversial first novel.According to biographer W. A. Swanberg, Dreiser "seemed to have had no inkling that he was creating a revolutionary work. He wrote with a compassion for human suffering that was exclusive with him in America. He wrote with a tolerance for transgression that was as exclusive and as natural" (De Grazia, 101). He was aware, however, that others would find the novel controversial. Even before it was submitted he had made attempts to revise, or "clean up" his novel, at the urging of his first wife, Sarah Osborne White, "Jug." With her help and that of his good friend Arthur Henry, he made many changes and cut an estimated 36,000 words from the manuscript. Franklin Doubleday, who was alarmed when he returned from Europe to find that his firm had taken the work, "went on to publish Carrie, but on his own terms. He personally edited the proofs and insisted to Dreiser that all the profanities be removed and certain suggestive passages altered The much-laundered Carrie became spotless; worse-yet, as Dreiser s biographer Richard Lingeman has said, Carrie s cheap-looking binding and lettering would have been more appropriate on a plumbing manual. Frank Doubleday carried out the terms of the contract for Carrie in the most minimal way possible, in the hope that it would not attract much notice" (DeGrazia, 103). Because of the alterations Sister Carrie avoided court prosecution but Dreiser felt it was "stillborn." The expurgated text made Carrie s motivations incoherent, and bad reviews killed the novel on its first publication. Dreiser was deeply affected by these struggles and did not publish another novel for ten years. H.L. Mencken spearheaded the novel s critical reappraisal, and it came to be recognized as a groundbreaking and influential novel of American realism and naturalism. As Sinclair Lewis said of Dreiser in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech in 1930, "without his pioneering, I doubt if any of us could, unless we liked to be sent to jail, seek to express life, beauty and terror" (Parker & Kermode, 2). Doubleday s records indicate, "the first edition consisted of 1008 copies, of which 129 were sent out for review, 465 were sold, and the balance, 423 copies, were turned over to [remainder house] J. F. Taylor & Company" (Orton, Dreiseriana, 17). This first edition is extremely rare. In 1929 Vrest Orton wrote that Sister Carrie "is much scarcer than is generally supposed A book printed in 1900 to the number of only 1008 copies, nearly half of them remaindered (everyone knows the fate of remainders) leaving only 546 actually sold to the trade, is, in 1930, a very scarce book. In the course of 30 years, any edition of 1000 copies of a novel will, for the most part, become lost, destroyed or worn out. And most copies that do exist, will not do so in a very good state" (Orton, 18). McDonald 28-32. Orton 16-19. Owner inscription on half title.Scattered foxing and soiling to text as often, inner paper hinges split, closed tear to final leaf, light wear to sound original cloth. A very good copy. Extremely rare and desirable. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 66675

Von: B & L Rootenberg Rare Books, ABAA (Sherman Oaks, CA, USA)
Beschreibung: Doubleday, Page & Co, New York, 1900. FIRST EDITION. Original publisher's red cloth with title in borders on the front board, a bit worn. Preserved in a half-morocco clamshell box with gilt decorated spine. Bookplate of Howard Roosa on the front paste-down. First edition of Dreiser's story of a young girl's move to the big city and her subsequent rise to fame as she pursues her own "American dream." The book was only published at the fraught urging of Dreiser, as even his wife found the content too sordid. Though less than five hundred copies were initially sold (out of a first run of 1008), it is now considered one of the greatest of all American urban novels. Dreiser (1871-1945) is one of the most recognizable members of the literary movement known as Naturalism. He was often forced to battle against censorship, as his subject matter was likely to offend authorities and regularly challenged popular standards of acceptable judgment. His writing frequently explores the tensions between desire, ambition, and social mores. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 16150

Inner hinges repaired, spine end and corners of cloth retouched, and torn bottom corner of rear free end paper reattached. Cloth moderately rubbed and spine darkened, light staining to textblock edge, light cigar-smoke odor to pages. Previous owner name to front paste down, foxing to prelims and terminals and contents toned. Verlag: Boni & Liveright (1925), New York (1925)
Anzahl: 1
Von: Charles Agvent, est. 1987, ABAA, ILAB (Fleetwood, PA, USA)
Beschreibung: Boni & Liveright (1925), New York, 1925. Hardcover. Reprint. A scarce book in its true First Edition of 1900, this is a fairly early copy of a book rarely found signed let alone with such a superb presentation. This copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "For/George W. Wilder/-The book that/introduced me - but/twenty years after/from/Theodore Dreiser/N.Y. April - 1926." Wilder, president of Butterick Publications, met Dreiser in June 1907, and on the basis of his growing reputation for SISTER CARRIE, hired him as editor-in-chief of his magazine THE DELINEATOR. Dreiser's statement of purpose published in the September issue of the magazine centered around woman's mastery of her own destiny, and he dedicated the publication "to strengthening her in her moral fight for righteousness in the world." Many of the magazine's readers were mothers, and one of the first series of articles that Dreiser commissioned was on the care and feeding of infants by Dr. Leonard K. Hirschberg, articles largely written by H. L. Mencken. Dreiser's relationship with Mencken eventually became one of the most interesting literary relationships of the twentieth century. A wonderful opportunity to obtain an outstanding association copy of one of the groundbreaking literary works of the twentieth century. Though many would not think of Theodore Dreiser as an advocate for women's rights, his first book, SISTER CARRIE, was enlightening in its portrayal of a young single woman's struggle to survive in a post-Victorian urban environment. His work shortly after as editor-in-chief of the magazine THE DELINEATOR, briefly described here, provided further evidence for Dreiser's concern for women's struggle to survive in early 20th century American society. Area of discoloration to the cloth at the upper right front corner; spine mildly sunned. Very Good or better with a fine association. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 014350

Von: B & B Rare Books, Ltd., ABAA (New York, NY, USA)
Beschreibung: New York: B. W. Dodge & Company, 1907. Hard Cover. Zustand: Very Good. second Edition. Second edition, first issue. Signed and inscribed by Dreiser to the front free endpaper. Dark red cloth stamped in gilt. Boards lightly soiled and variously worn, with tips bumped and spine cocked; with photograph of Dreiser mounted onto front pastedown and previous owner's bookplate and ownership inscription to front free endpaper, as well as a brief typed biography of Dreiser tipped in to the rear free endpaper, and ownership inscription to p.557. Overall a very good copy. Sister Carrie tells the story Caroline Meeber, a young woman from Wisconsin who dreams of living a glamorous life in the city. After she moves to Chicago, Carrie becomes the mistress of two wealthy businessmen, through whom she is able to transform herself into a stylish urban woman. After moving to New York City, Carrie is able to fulfil her dreams of becoming a famous actress, but only to realize that material wealth does not elicit true happiness. Although today considered one of Dreier's best novels, Sister Carrie was initially met with mixed critical reviews and was not commercially successful. While the protagonist's lack of Victorian moral values all but ensured that there would be some negative criticism, much of Sister Carrie's initial lack of success was due to the publisher's distaste for the novel; after Dreiser made publication arrangements with Walter Page, his partner Frank Doubleday attempted to cancel the publication, but, being legally prevented from doing so, appeased himself by refusing to market the text properly. Gilt lettering on spine and top edge gilt. In very good beige slip case. Copy #933 of 1500 by The Limited Edition Club. Signed by illustrator Reginald Marsh on colophon. Marsh (1898 - 1954) was a celebrated American painter of the Social Realism movement, born in Paris and most notable for his depictions of life in New York City in the 1920s and 1930s, his works are found in major museums throughout the United States. Introduction by journalist, editor and literary critic Burton Rascoe. Near Fine. The lower front cover corner bears a very slight bump. Tall 8vo. xiv, 387. Dreiser's masterpiece and first novel. Exultantly praised by the likes of Sinclair Lewis and H. L. Mencken, it is on Modern Library's list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In Sister Carrie, Dreiser portrays a changing society, writing about a 18 year old woman who flees rural life for the big city of Chicago and struggles with poverty, economic exploitation, complex relationships with men, and as a kept woman. For its libertine sexual morality it received resistance in publishing. The initial publisher Doubleday & McClure accepted the manuscript then declined to publish until relenting at the insistence of Dreiser and 1,008 copies were printed in 1900. Although often well received by critics, the publisher refused to promote it, and it sold less than 500 copies. All subsequent editions were censored until a scholarly edition released by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 1981. Sister Carrie was adapted for the 1952 twice-Oscar nominated film, Carrie, starring Jennifer Jones and Laurence Olivier. Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser (1871 - 1945) was an American novelist and journalist of the naturalist school who was nominated for a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930. Size: Tall 8vo.
