Von: APPLEDORE BOOKS, ABAA (WACCABUC, NY, USA)
Beschreibung: Faber and Faber, London, 1960. Cloth. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. A very solid example of the true 1st editions, 1st issues of the 4 titles which make up Durrell's masterful "Alexandria Quartet". Published separately between 1957-1960, the Quartet includes "Justine" (1957), followed in quick succession by "Balthazar" (1958), "Mountolive" (1958) and, finally, "Clea" (1960). All 4 books have held up very well and all 4 are tight and Near Fine in crisp, price-intact, VG+ or better dustjackets. Save for a bit of very light chipping at the spine crowns and just a touch of darkening along several of the spines, this is an attractive, very well-preserved set. Verlag: London Faber and Faber -1960 (1957)
Anzahl: 1
Von: Shapero Rare Books (London, Vereinigtes Königreich)
Beschreibung: London Faber and Faber -1960, 1957. First editions, first impressions, four volumes, 8vo., comprising Justine, internally fine, dust-jacket, price-clipped with two small closed chips and one small, closed tear to spine edges, light dust-soiling and a few spots to edges and fore-edge, otherwise very good and a better than usual example , 1957; Balthazar, internally fine, dust-jacket toned at extremities and on spine, closed tear to base of upper fold on spine, otherwise near-fine, 1958; Mountolive, fine, 1958; Clea, internally fine, a couple of minor marks to upper panel of dust-jacket but none of the usual fading to the spine, 1960; original cloth, bright, in all a very good-plus set. At the age of 11, Durrell, who was born in the North of India near Tibet, was obliged to move to England. He disliked living in such a different country and culture and never fully adapted to it. Only later, in 1935, when he and his family made a decision to live in Greece he felt that it reminded him of India. While in Greece, he drafted a novel entitled The Book of the Dead, a predecessor to his first volume of The Alexandria Quartet. However, only much later, in 1952, after his return to the Mediterranean, Durrell began actually writing Justine. During the 1940s he had worked for the British Information Office in Egypt. He was separated from his first wife, Nancy Myers, and in Alexandria he met Eve Cohen, a Jewish woman on whom the character of Justine is loosely based and who became his second wife. Durrell would eventually complete the Quartet in France. The Alexandria Quartet was a success, both with the critics and with an increasing readership and Durrell was acknowledged as being one of the most important writers of his time. Von: Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB. (London, Vereinigtes Königreich)
Beschreibung: London: Faber and Faber, 1962, 1962. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine in gilt on blue ground. With the dust jacket. Spine ends gently bumped, short closed tear to rear board, light rubbing. A near-fine copy in the very good dust jacket, slight toning to spine and edges, a few edge-splits, minor loss to spine ends and rear panel. First one-volume edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Margaret McCall from Larry Durrell" along with a full-page drawing of a map titled "Languedoc by Epfs" and showing Sommières, Nîmes, Uzès, Cevennes, and Anduze. These places were of particular importance to him: "he completed Justine, the first volume of the Quartet, on Cyprus in 1956, after his separation from Eve, and wrote the remaining three volumes in Languedoc, where he lived near Nîmes and in Sommières" (ODNB). The recipient Margaret McCall (1925-2008) was a BBC producer. She was married to the television script writer Philip Broadley who nicknamed her "Lauren" due to her resemblance to Lauren Bacall. In Broadley's obituary in The Times newspaper, Margaret is mentioned: "She joined BBC TV and went on to produce some of the corporation's finest arts and music documentaries in the 1960s and 1970s, introducing numerous writers and artists to television for the first time. Among them were Lawrence Durrell, with whom she developed a special friendship, John Betjeman, who likewise became a close friend, Robert Graves, and Graham Sutherland". This "special relationship" was likely a love affair with Durrell. She did an interview for the BBC "Intimations: Lawrence Durrell. Strong opinions from the author of The Alexandria Quartet" broadcast in 1965, probably at the beginning of their affair. A lovely association copy. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 136288
