Beschreibung: Heinemann. London, 1947. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Two volumes. First impressions from the Uniform Edition, both copies dedicated and signed by Greene in black ink, both copies dedicated to Sussex author Geoffrey Cotterell. Both dedications dated March 1947. However, on 'A Gun for Sale' Greene has clearly prepared the dedication in advance, leaving a space for the name of the recipient into which Cotterell's name has been inserted, written in blue ink. 'Brighton Rock' bears a contemporaneous inscription to Cotterell in black ink, uniformly executed. Both copies may be regarded as artefacts of the many months of work that Greene undertook prior to the filming of Brighton Rock in the summer of 1947. The Boulting Brothers began shooting on location in Brighton in June during the hottest summer on record. However, Greene had been travelling from London to Brighton since January to write and reconnoitre, but perhaps more importantly to build relationships and goodwill. His novel had angered many in Brighton, who thought it damaging for tourism and for trade; in 1938 the Brighton Gazette had described the novel as being: "A gross libel on Brighton which gives a totally wrong and damaging impression of the place and its public officials." That sentiment persisted post-war. If Boulting's unit was to film on location, goodwill and co-operation was essential: roads would need to be closed, permits and permissions obtained, so in the early months of 1947 Greene and others sought to build the relationships, co-operation and goodwill necessary for the project to succeed. The first two titles of the Uniform Edition had been recently published and it's likely that Greene prepared signed and dated copies such as this example of 'A Gun for Sale', leaving room for the name of the recipient to be entered into the dedication as required. These two volumes are testament to that endeavour. Collett's London booksellers label to the front pastedown on both volumes. Very good condition, backstrips sunned, dustwrappers slightly edge-worn and faded, otherwise no faults. Signed by Author(s). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 2965

Beschreibung: The Viking Press, New York, 1938. First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-2] 3-358 [359-360], original orange and black cloth, front and spine stamped in silver, top edge stained black. "A blend of horror, adventure, mystery and morbid realism for this weird, sometimes original story of murders at Brighton Rock, the London Coney Island. An unprepossessing Londoner on a Bank Holiday is the first victim and his friend of the day investigates the murder, which was done by Pinkie, a boy of 17, heading a gang of racing racketeers, whose rule is threatened by another more powerful gang. Perversed, abnormal, dwarfed, the "Boy" goes from one razor cutting to another in his attempt to cover his initial crime, is forced to marry a young girl who holds the clue to the first killing, though he hates women and despises his own impotency. And in the end -- inevitable defeat for the "Boy". For this type of thing, overlong and occasionally repetitive, with some unconvincing elements. But there is a good sense of the tawdry scene and the crowds, and considerable originality with interesting psychological touches to the characterization." - Kirkus review, 1 June, 1938. Filmed in 1947 and again in 2010. Hubin, p. 349. A fine copy in a very good to nearly fine dust jacket with mild wear to the corner tips and spine ends, a few rub spots and toning to the spine panel and edges of the rear panel. Provenance, the Otto Penzler copy. (24962). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 24962

Beschreibung: The Viking Press, 1938., New York, 1938. First edition. First edition. The U. S. edition precedes the U. K. edition. Original red cloth with black and silver band at the top, cloth lightly rubbed else near fine tight copy in dust jacket with light wear to the spine ends and corners, extremities rubbed, rear pastedown sheet lightly toned, small chip to top edge of rear cover panel resulting in a loss to the last letter of the title. Still a better than usual copy of this Haycraft-Queen "Cornerstone" mystery novel. Pinkie Brown is a small-town hoodlum whose gang runs a protection racket based at Brighton race course. When Pinkie orders the murder of a rival, Fred, the police believe it to be suicide. This doesn't convince Ida Arnold, who was with Fred just before he died, and she sets out to find the truth. She comes across naive waitress Rose, who can prove that Fred was murdered. In an attempt to keep Rose quiet Pinkie marries her. But with his gang beginning to doubt his ability, and his rivals taking over his business, Pinkie starts to become more desperate and violent. A Haycraft/Queen Cornerstone mystery and considered by many to be Greene's best mystery novel. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 43683

Beschreibung: Nov. 18, 1939. green headed paper, signed in black ink, with stamp of receipt at foot dated 20/11/39, p. [1], crown 8vo, original fold, very good condition. A short note, to the Broadway producer Gilbert Miller, but a significant one in terms of offering a record of the author's taste in contemporary drama, and his wishes in respect of his breakout novel: 'I feel it would be well worth considering Patrick Hamilton as a dramatist for Brighton Rock. You remember Rope and Gas Light? He can put real horror into a play, knows how to get realistic atmosphere, and could manage the good-and-evil theme very well'. In the event, Miller's production employed Walter Kerr and Leo Brady to adapt the work; when the Boulting brothers made the British film version in 1947, the screenplay was undertaken by Greene himself alongside Terence Rattigan, but Greene's admiration for Hamilton's work endured - he called 'West Pier' 'the best novel written about Brighton', modestly disregarding his own contender for the accolade. Beschreibung: William Heinemann, London, UK, 1938. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: As New. FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. 1st/1st - This wonderful book certainly stands out from the crowd! - Strong boards firmly held to page block. Small tear to the spine cloth at the top and small chip to bottom. Looks amazingly clean with very minor soiling. Slight scuffing to corners. A beautiful and vibrant facsimile dust-jacket, produced from an original first printing cover, which was beautifully restored, houses the book; so you can see how the book looked exactly when it was first sold! - Iconic pink and black cover design. - All 361 pages are present. The front and rear blank end-pages are missing and there is a small nick to the page edge on the full title page. Pages are browned and foxed throughout. There is a crack at the margin at the very last page. - Graham Greene on Brighton Rock: - Brighton Rock I began in 1937 as a detective story and continued, I am sometimes tempted to think, as an error of judgmentThe first fifty pages of Brighton Rock are all that remain of the detective story; they would irritate me, if I dared to look at them now, for I know I ought to have had the strength of mind to remove them, and to start the story againhowever difficult the revisions might have proved with what is now called Part Two .the setting of Brighton Rock may in part belong to an imaginary geographic region. Though Nelson Place has been cleared away since the war, and the Brighton race gangs were to all intents quashed forever as a serious menace at Lewes Assizes a little before the date of my novel, and even Sherry's dance hall has vanished, they certainly did exist; there was a real Nelson Place, and a man was kidnapped on Brighton front in a broad daylight of the thirties, though not in the same circumstances as Hale, and his body was found somewhere out towards the Downs flung from a car. Colleoni, the gang leader, had his real prototype who had retired by 1938 and lived a gracious Catholic life in one of the Brighton crescents, although I found his name was still law when I demanded entrance by virtue of it to a little London nightclub called The Nest behind Regent Street -- All the same I must plead guilty to manufacturing this Brighton of mine as I never manufactured Mexico or Indochina. There were no living models for these gangsters, nor for the barmaid who so obstinately refused to come alive. I had spent only one night in the company of someone who could have belonged to Pinkie's ganga man from the Wandsworth dog-tracks whose face had been carved because he was suspected of grassing to the bogies after a killing in the stadium. (He taught me the only professional slang I knew, but one cannot learn a language in one night however long.) -- .The Pinkies are the real Peter Pans doomed to be juvenile for a lifetime. They have something of a fallen angel about them, a morality which once belonged to another place. The outlaw of justice always keeps in his heart the sense of justice outraged his crimes have an excuse and yet he is pursued by the Others. The Others have committed worse crimes and flourish. The world is full of Others who wear the masks of Success, of a Happy Family. Whatever crime he may be driven to commit the child who doesn't grow up remains the great champion of justice. "An eye for an eye." "Give them a dose of their own medicine." As children we have all suffered punishments for faults we have not committed, but the wound has soon healed. With Raven and Pinkie the wound never heals. - END - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 000006

Beschreibung: Invincible Press n.d. circa, 1945. FIRST AUSTRALIAN EDITION, the pages toned throughout, last few leaves nicked at head, ownership inscription dated 1948 to title-page, pp. 175, crown 8vo, original stapled wrappers repeating design of the Heinemann first edition, the front repeating ownership inscription and with price sticker, the rear panel toned, rubbed to extremities with some light creasing, chipped at ends of upper joint, good. A fragile edition, giving a pulp feel to Greene's novel whilst retaining the design; it is possible that the text itself is less well-served by the evident abridgement.
