This courteous response to a query was written from Smith's hometown of Newton Centre in March of 1895, a few short months before his death. He wrote: "Dear Madame, The photograph for the picture in the Herald was taken by Hardy, 523 Washington St., Boston. Sincerely Yours, S.F. Smith". The notepaper he wrote on measures 4 13/16" x 4 1/2". Samuel Francis Smith (1808-1895) was a Baptist minister and an author, but he is best known today for penning the lyrics to "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" -- also known as "America," which was the title Smith originally gave the piece. Amory N. Hardy (1835-1911) was a well-known Boston photographer who operated a studio on Washington Street from 1879-1887. There are tiny separations at both ends of the fold line.
