EISENHOWER ON JANUARY 17, 1953, THREE DAYS BEFORE HIS INAUGURATION AS PRESIDENT In one of his first acts as president, President-elect Eisenhower plans to assist the American Bible Society in sending Holy Bibles to the Soviet Union through his Secretary of State: Thank you for your thoughtful letter of January 14th informing me that the American Bible Society has large quantities of Russian scriptures on hand ready to ship to Russia as a free gift. The interesting portfolio which you also submitted outlines graphically the situation in Russia, and describes in interesting detail the scriptures which your organization has available for distribution. As you so well know, there are many difficulties involved in attempting to make such a gift. I am forwarding your letter, together with the portfolio to the Secretary of State-designate, John Foster Dulles, in order that he may be familiar with the gift which the American Bible Society is prepared to make.
