This program commemorates the Summer 1978 residency of the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in upstate New York. Arthur Fiedler, best known as the charismatic conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, was the guest conductor for the evening on August 19. He inscribed the page of the program dedicated to that evening's performance in black ink, "To Jackie Taylor Cordially Arthur Fiedler Aug. 1978". Fiedler carefully signed in the blank spaces between the names of the evening's composers, not covering any of the text of the program. The program measures approximately 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" when open. Arthur Fiedler (1894-1979) was an accomplished violinist who joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1915. He also performed as a pianist, organist, and percussionist. In 1930, he became conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, and held that position for fifty years. He also worked closely with the San Francisco Pops for approximately two and a half decades, and was guest conductor of dozens of orchestras the world over. The cover of the program has an inch-long separation at the top of the fold and a small tear at the right edge. There is some slight wrinkling of the paper and some light toning to the pages, but the program is in very good condition overall, with a bold inscription and signature.
