Inscribed and Signed by the author to the endpaper: 'To Miss Helen Joan Smith Ph.D, with many thanks for kind assistance, Edinburgh 9 May, 1952, Max Born' Binding sound. Some mottling to the covers. Very clean internally. Light soiling to the rear endpaper. Slight bubbling to cloth of rear board. Born's last professional position was Tait Professor of Natural Philosophy at Edinburgh University where, beginning in 1936, he promoted the teaching of mathematical physics while continuing his research into the behaviour of electrons. I suspect that Miss Smith was a Ph.D student of Born's and that this copy of his work was gifted to her around the time of his retirement and relocation to Germany, in 1952.
