Stated Third Edition. Published in the same year as the first edition. Signed and inscribed by the author on the half-title page. Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy of this title for sale anywhere on the Internet. The inscription reads: 'To my dear friend _______ from Clement Scott, June 1895 '. I'd really like to know who that friend was, probably not an actor judging from what you can read below about the author. However, Mr. Scott's handwritten leaves much to be desired. Take a look at the photo and see if you can find a famous name in the inscription. The book is in quite decent shape, not perfect. I've rated it Very Good taking into account its age. You can see the covers in the photos. They are mostly clean. The gilt lettering on both the front and spine still has some glittering to it. There are a couple of crinkles in the cloth above the bottom edge of the front cover. There is a little bump/dent off the front top edge and another off the front bottom edge. The cover edges look otherwise pretty good, no conspicuous rubbing, a little white on the green of the two bottom edges. The corners have a very slight bit of fraying and the top front one may have a speck-sized bit of rub-through. The top and bottom edges of the spine have little crinkling and rubbing, the bottom one has a teeny tiny tear. All page edges are deckled or rough-cut, so an occasional edge (not too many) may be a little jagged, and a few pages are a little longer than the others. The book is quite solidly bound. I turned over all the pages and didn't find any spaces between any of them. A thin strip of the paper that covers the juncture between the front inside cover and the front end paper needs to be glued back into place. It is all there, just a case of gluing it back over the little bit of webbing that is showing. However, the front cover is tightly bound as is the rear cover which has a very thin space at its juncture. There is one illustration that is only attached at its top inch or so. The edge that has pulled away has done so cleanly, perfectly. The page right before it which has the chapter heading ( Peeps Of Old England) was not cut at the top edge that it shares with the last page of the previous chapter. You can read what it says from the side if you choose to leave it uncut. There are no other uncut pages. The pages are exceptionally clean. I saw no more than a few inconspicuous spots. Even the white inside covers and front end papers are quite clean. There is no foxing anywhere in the book. There are five black-and-white full-page illustrations, one is before the dedication page, one is before the first page of the first chapter. All five illustrations are in excellent condition, very clean, no wear, including the semi-attached one. The pages are in very good condition. I didn't see any placeholder creases. There are no markings. No attachments. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing to be found in the book. The four chapter headings (although they are not identified as chapters) are Walnut Tree Farm; Under the Apple Trees; Peeps of Old England; and A Painter's Dreamland. 'Clement William Scott was an influential English theatre critic for The Daily Telegraph and other journals, and a playwright, lyricist, translator and travel writer, in the final decades of the 19th century. His style of criticism, acerbic, flowery and (perhaps most importantly) carried out on the first night of productions, set the standard for theatre reviewers through to today. Scott accumulated enemies among theatre managers, actors and playwrights as years went on, picking quarrels with William Archer, Ibsen, George Bernard Shaw and others. After he gave a particularly ill-considered 1898 interview, in which he attacked the morals of theatre people, especially actresses, he was forced to retire as a theatre critic and his reputation and prospects suffered badly until, by the end of his life, he was impoverished.'.
