Antique Friendship Album of A. Lilian Hodgkinson 1895-1904

Original hand-drawn/painted/written Souvenirs book belonging to A. Lilian Hodgkinson [Lily], dated 1895. With hand-painted title page, probably done by Lily s mother, who has written the first entry in the book It is crammed full with handwritten autographs, including sayings, poetry and prose excerpts from famous literature, signed by friends and family, plus hand-done sketches and paintings. Written in French and English - it appears the family split their time between the two countries. There are dates and places on a number of the written and pictorial entries. The album has 120 pages in all, with entries on all but a few. They are dated 1895-1904. 139 written entries with signatures. There are 24 pictorial images, including pencil sketches, pen and ink drawings, watercolours. Many of the entries are in French, from friends in Lyon, France. The English entries are from various places including London, Frieston Priory, Moulton, Spalding, Nottingham. The album has a brown faux leather cover with ornate brown and gilt endpapers, all edges gilt. Also included is the remains of a hand-made embroidered fabric cover dated 1895, presumably made by Lily herself. Condition: The covers have edge wear and the spine is badly worn and torn, but still holding the book together. Spine binding a little loose but all pages attached. Front and spine only of fabric cover with fraying and wear. Other than that the pages are still bright and clear with very little in the way of age toning or stains.
