This British architect's many archaeological explorations (mainly in Greece) and writings shaped his work, which include several Banks of England, Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, Cambridge University Library, National Monument at Edinburgh and numerous other major commissions. ALS (partially clipped), 3pp, 4½" X 5½" (lettersheet), n.p., 27 September 1853. Addressed to General Fox. Very good. It appears that a small bit has been trimmed off the bottom edge, resulting in the loss of a few words at bottom of the first and second pages (only). Penned large and bold in brown ink, Cockerell discusses "the sad situation of our old Friend, & had sat some hours with him three weeks ago -- but the moment I got your characteristic note I paid him a long visit. It is a right good soul, & you see that any defects of humour he may have Exhibited, have arisen from a very inferior constitution, which I have long known to be so. I am sure he will be touched by your kindness, [now as] always, to see his sad decay." One wonders who this unnamed mutual friend might be.
