This popular historian and philosopher advocated the theory of evolution and applied it to his theory of "inevitable historical progress" in such books as "Darwinism and Other Essays" and "Excursions of an Evolutionist." ANS, 2pp, 4" X 2½" heavy stock card, n.p., 1897 August 20. Near fine. This note to an admirer explains why Fiskeís autograph is seldom seen, for he explains that "all requests for autographs, are thrown into the waste-basket without reaching me. But your letter moved the stony heart of my reader." Accompanied by a fine carte-de-visite portrait (backstamp of Warrenís, Boston) of a young Fiske -- itself scarce and desirable.
