Original blind card wrappers housing Japanese-style bound volume of ten doubled sheets, computer-printed to create a total of 14 pp. of text. Light toning and discoloration to wrappers; else very good. A group of computer art materials connected to the pioneering work of Josef Volvovi?, with the H?la brothers (Ji?? H?la and Zdenek H?la) and their underground Galerie H founded in 1983. The group includes the first manifesto of computer graphics as an art form in Czechoslovakia, published by Galerie H, which opens with a definition: ?By computer art we understand output from self-programmed computers that have aesthetic value and are the result of programs created for this purpose. Thus, we will not consider random aesthetically pleasing output of programs developed for another purpose as computer art. Another necessary property of computer art is its uniqueness. The programs must be created in such a way that each time they run, they produce new, and different, results.? The authors also stipulate that the origin of their computer art is ?1. Poetry; 2. Concrete poetry; 3. Typewritten concrete poetry; 4. Computer graphics? This genealogy places the development of computer art in the context of minimalism, language arts, and conceptualism more broadly. The concrete poet and artist Josef Volvovi? (b. 1951) studied mathematics and philosophy at the Charles University in Prague. Along with Ji?? H?la (1944 ? 2022) who also studied mathematics, Volvovi? started experimenting with computer art in the late 1970s. Included in this group is a 1988 brochure to the Volvovi? exhibition of computer art. The accompanying text is more poetic in tone than the original manifesto: ?On the printed page, in one specific and coordinated location ? this sounds almost like a fairytale ? there appears a small point. And this point is the center of the circle. The symbol appears, and that is all we need, as the radius of the circle is determined randomly. The computer starts to examine and compare, which of the structures most closely matches the definition of a circle, then stores the appropriate one in its memory, and finally prints them all with a randomly chosen character. The resulting image is unique, asymmetrical in all its axes, has the properties of a good drawing, emphasized by the technical imperfection of the printer. It affects what is most important in our sense of the basic geometric shape.? The exhibition brochure in this group, from September 1989, promises accompaniment by computer music by P. Randula. The original work of computer art in this group, also from 1989, is signed and dated and marked as no. 47 out of 100. A combination of screen printing and computer text, it was commissioned by the town of Kostelec for its anniversary. As of August 2025, none of the materials could be traced via KVK, OCLC.
