First Edition. Octavo. First illustrated edition. 494 pages. Inscribed by the author "Sincerely/Herman Wouk. The year after the novel won the Pulitzer Prize, Doubleday issued this Deluxe Edition with special illustrations by Lawrence Beall Smith. The endpapers have nice maps of the Pacific Theatre where the Caine sailed and identifying the events and dates where Queeg takes command and the mutiny takes place. The four special paintings by Lawrence Beall Smith make this a very nice edition. As a member of the Associated American Artists, he became a major combat artist in World War II while on aircraft carriers and as the Normandy Invasion took place. He was the only artist who was present on D-Day so his paintings always have the ring of truth. His four major paintings in this volume are: Maryk Recovers the Float, Willie Keith's Come-coming, the Capsized Ship and Queeg Versus Greenwald. A very good copy bound in black cloth spine lettering in blue and silver, some light rubbing to lower joint, upper corner bumped, in clipped pictorial dust jacket with a crease to front flap some light wear and chipping to edges and two tiny edge tears and toning to rea flap. No names or bookplates. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 032101
