This Austrian politician and diplomat succeeded U Thant and became the fourth Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1972, serving until 1981; in 1986 he was elected the ninth president of Austria, serving until 1992, although allegations attempting to implicate him in Nazi war crimes on the Eastern front plagued his later years.
