This is #498 of 500 copies of the Autograph Edition. Signed by Hawthorne's daughter, Rose Hawthorne, publisher Houghton Mifflin, and the artist for each volume. Of the 500 similar sets printed, this set is one of a select few issued with A DOCUMENT SIGNED BY NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE. Bound into Volume I is an original document signed on October 26, 1853, by Hawthorne when he was the United States Consul to Liverpool (1853-1857). The document is for receipt of the infamous clipper transport ship, "The Yorkshire" upon its arrival in Liverpool from New York. E. Scudder. Beautifully bound in three-quarter brown morocco and marbled boards; 5 raised bands at spine with decorative gilt in the compartments; top edge gilt, page edges untrimmed. Overall Very Good Condition. Some light rubbing over raised bands on spine, and some bumping to book corners. Gilt is bright and pages crisp and clean. BAL 7645 While volume thirteen is away somewhere unknown in the world living its best life without its set, the twenty one volumes here are gorgeous and contain a piece of both Hawthorne and maritime history complete with a lingering mystery. Each volume also contains a frontispiece hand signed, in pencil, by the artist. This particular set includes a colored plate followed by the same image in black and white and signed by the illustrator.
