"Connecticut, the third-smallest state in the Union, has a colorful history, encompassing some of the nation's earliest colonial settlements. Here, many important decisions of the Revolutionary War were made, thus forming a firm foundation for the state to become one of America's strongest industrial economies. [The book] portrays this history and traces the progress of the state to today's high-technology success. William Hubbell's superb photography and Roger Eddy's evocative text have distilled the essence of Connecticut with an overview of the commonwealth in both images and words, graphically depicting its historical buildings and original stone walls, along with modern cities such as Hartford and Stamford. The images focus on the state's magnificent beauty and history, ranging from fall foliage and wine vinyards to the Capitol and Squantz Pond State Park, from the 1731 Putnam Cottage and the Old Newgate Prison to the state's modern ski areas and the traditional rowing competition between Yale and Harvard. Professional photograher Hubbell has traversed the state for a year and a half to photograph this book, crisscrossing the landscape almost as thoroughly as did the old stone walls. Eddy, a lifetime Connecticut resident, hs written a text that is organized into four significant sections - The Land, Colonial Connecticut, The Industrial Revolution, and Modern-day Connecticut. He traces the state's history from its colonial beginnings through its evolution into today's modern economic giant. Together, photographs and words have captured not only the scenic beauty of Connecticut, but also its moods, its vitality - the heart and soul that are Connecticut." - from the inner front jacket flap.
