Inhaltsangabe
A collection of photographs that feature those doors and ironworks of Charleston, Carolina that are aesthetically and historically significant. The book covers three chronological periods - pre-revolutionary, post-revolutionary and ante-bellum and includes such well-known landmarks as the Court House, the Dock Street Theatre, the Fireproof Building the Iibernian Hall and St Philip's Church. The doors and gates of many private residences are also included, ranging from the Ashe House to the Manigault House and the Pink House. In all, more than 70 doors and gates of the famous Port City are featured. In every part of the city, the homes are unmistakably Charleston, heavily influenced by England's Georgian period. Designs were also influenced by some of Europe's and America's first architects, such as Robert Adam and Robert Mills. But it was practical use that governed their shape and dimensions. The advent of the "single-house" and "double-house" was unique to Charleston, as were the cloistered gardens that were functional as well as beautiful.
