Artikelbeschreibung vom Verkäufer

WILLIAM ELLERY (1727-1820). William Ellery was a Founding Father of the United States, a Declaration of Independence signer, and a representative and signer for Rhode Island in the Articles of Confederation.ADS. 2pg. c. May 1768. N.p. An autograph document signed William Ellery giving various instructions. for the most they will fetch excepting three of the best calf skins which are to be well curried on the grain side, and excepting two best sides of leather, and one side to be curried for harness & In the long parchment book you will find a settlement with Col. Nath. Peirce. In that settlement I made a mistake as you will see by the Nota bene. The ballance in fact is but $2/3$ which you may pay him if he should call for it. I leave with you Oliver Wests account. The ballance due to him is $5/10 lawful which you may pay him if he should call for it in flax or corn, or potatoes, or if he will not take either of those articles, in money. M. Reynolds is to make for Prue a strong pair of leathern heel'd shoes. If she should fall sick so as to need a physician, a physician must be applied to at my expence. I mention this circumstance because it was suggested to me by Mr. Carey, and it is not worth while to leave a direction to here about it. I would have russeting & greening apple trees planted for the outward rows of the Orchard, and within, Tallmans and other good sweetings, Pearmains, Clarkes apples, Gillyflowers, Cat-heads, and any other species of good apples; but I would chuse to have a greater number of sweetings than of any other sort of apple trees. If you can get Thomas Peck, to help thresh oats, break and swingle flax, or to do any other sort, or either of his Sons will work, for him employ him or them for he owes money to Col. Careys estate. William Ellery. This letter is a list of tasks for an overseer or partner because of Ellery leaving town. As a clerk of the court, he had to attest to the colonys General Treasurer that Samuel Brown had fulfilled his civic duty by attending the Inferior Court for 19 days during the May 1768 term. This document shows that while Ellery was busy at the courthouse certifying Samuel Browns attendance for the Treasurer, he had to hastily write this letter to ensure his orchard got planted, his leather was treated, and his household was looked after while he was away. It is framed so the first page of the document can be seen through the back of the frame. This document has some see-through writing on verso and is in fine condition.

Shop-Beschreibung

Stuart Lutz Historic Documents, Inc. buys and sells historic letters, documents, manuscripts and archives. My specialties include Presidents, Revolutionary War and Civil War figures, Declaration of Independence Signers, famous authors, important business leaders, notable scientists, aviators, notable women and African-Americans, and other "household famous names." I also enjoy handling the letters and archives of ordinary people whose writings have extraordinary or unusual content, such as an eyewitness description of the Pearl Harbor attack. I am a member of all major trade organizations, including the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America (ABAA), the Professional Autograph Dealers Association (PADA), the Appraisers Association of America, the Manuscript Society and the Ephemera Society. I am located in South Orange, New Jersey, and I travel to many book and manuscript shows every year. I am one of the very few members of the Appraisers Association of America certified to appraise historic documents, manuscripts and letters. I am USPAP qualified to perform appraisals for estate, donation and insurance purposes; please contact me for a confidential discussion of your appraisal needs. I am an author myself, having published The Last Leaf: Voices of History's Last-Known Survivors (Prometheus Books, 2010) that contains 39 interviews with the last survivor of, or final eyewitness to, important historical events. Chapters include interviews with the last three Civil War widows, the final living pitcher to surrender a home run to Babe Ruth, Houdini's last stagehand, and the final American doughboy. Lastly, I can frequently be seen authenticating and appraising on the History Channel hit show Pawn Stars.
