Joseph Brand Whitlock was a journalist, attorney, politician, four-time mayor of Toledo, Ohio elected on the Independent ticket; ambassador to Belgium, and author of numerous articles and books, both novels and non-fiction. Appointed as minister to Belgioum by President Wilson in 1913, his responsiv=bilities increased to seven countries with the outbreak of WWI. Leaving Belgium in1917. he accompanied other Americans into neutral Switzerland, returning to Begium after the armistice was signed in 1918. This is a Menu card for a dinner in his honor in New York at the Lotos Club, one of the oldest literary clubs in the United States, December 23, 1915. It is more of a poster than a menu that would be on a table, The art work is by illustrator Charles Sindelar, whose work included a series of menus for the Lotos Club. one of the oldest literary clubs in the United States. Sindelar's menu covers incorporated a likeness of the celebrity who was being feted at the event, accompanied by intricate detailing.
