ROBERT MORRIS (1734-1806). Robert Morris is one of the most underappreciated men of the American Revolution. An American merchant, he was elected to the Second Continental Congress in 1776, but initially voted against the Declaration. He eventually signed the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. He secured much financial assistance for the Colonial side during the Revolutionary War. He later became Washington's first choice for Secretary of Treasury. Later, he delved heavily into land speculation, eventually buying most of western New York. Sadly, these land deals would land him in debtors' prison from 1798 until 1801. Document. 2pg. 8 ½ x 14". 1782. No place [presumably Philadelphia]. A document in an unknown hand concerning Robert Morris's management of the Continental Navy, a post he started in 1781. In 1781, Morris sent his aide, John Brown of Philadelphia, on a fact-finding mission throughout the Middle Atlantic and New England colonies. This is a contemporary copy of Brown's expenses from that trip. The document is headed "The Honble Robert Morris Esq To John Brown - The following Expenses in a journey to the Eastern States on the business the Navy department?". The first expenses are in Philadelphia for oats, cleaning pistols and saddles, and then Brown mentions the various locations from his 1781 and 1782 trip. He mentions Trenton, Princeton, Morristown, and Fishkill before arriving at Boston on October 9th and eventually in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, site of a major shipbuilding yard. Some of the more interesting expenses include "printing advertisements for Seamen?Advertising Contract in five papers?". The total expense for Brown's trip was over 300 pounds. There is some chipping to the right margin, some fold separations, and handwritten mathematical calculations covering the fourth page. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 5275
